The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium installed a microgrid to help power a portion of the Polar Frontier exhibit. A ground-mount solar array powers an extensive battery system behind the meter of the Polar Frontier complex, working like a backup generator to provide renewable energy when needed.

Challenges

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium was open and active during the installation of the microgrid.

Outcome

The project was completed on schedule with 775 hours.

Highlights

The 134.4KW ground-mounted solar array was one of only 3 solar projects AEP completed in the State of Ohio in 2020.
