The Kilbourne Run Sports Park was built to provide a large-scale recreational space for the Columbus community, creating a place for athletes, families and visitors to gather year-round. Spanning roughly 70 acres, the facility includes multiple soccer fields, a championship stadium, support buildings and parking areas designed to host local play and larger tournaments.
Claypool Electric provided the full electrical scope for the new site, supporting everything from incoming utility service through distribution, lighting, communication systems and infrastructure across the entire complex. The work covered multiple buildings and open field areas, requiring coordination across trades and careful planning to keep systems connected across long distances.
From stadium lighting to underground infrastructure, every part of the facility depends on the electrical systems installed on this project. Power, communication and safety systems were designed to work together to support a fully operational sports complex.
Challenges
Building a new sports complex at this scale required coordination across a wide and continuously evolving job site. Key challenges included:
- Managing extensive underground installation across a 70-acre site, including long conduit runs exceeding 1,000 feet in some areas.
- Working through difficult site conditions, including mud, freezing temperatures and severe winter weather that impacted equipment and productivity.
- Coordinating multiple buildings and field systems simultaneously, including the stadium, maintenance building and restroom facilities.
- Adapting to ongoing design changes and added scope while maintaining project timelines and sequencing.
- Ensuring precise underground layout before vertical construction, with limited physical reference points during early phases.
Outcome
The completed sports park operates with a fully integrated electrical and communication system that supports lighting, security, operations and event use across the entire facility. From field lighting to building systems, the infrastructure allows the site to function as a cohesive and reliable environment for both daily use and large-scale events.
Claypool’s work supported the delivery of a modern athletic complex designed for long-term use by the community. The space now provides a safe, well-lit and fully connected environment for athletes and families, while supporting the City of Columbus’ investment in recreation and public infrastructure.
