St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church Lighting System Upgrade
Location: Zanesville, Ohio
Project Type: Electrical Contractor
Contract: $178,186
Role: Electrical Contractor
Construction Manager: CK Construction
Completion: 2024
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, a historic landmark in downtown Zanesville, underwent a significant lighting system upgrade as part of its rededication after a four-and-a-half-year closure due to structural issues. Originally completed in 1842 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, the church’s unique architecture and historical significance required a careful approach to modernizing its lighting while preserving its original character.
Challenges
Claypool Electric was tasked with updating the antiquated lighting system to a more efficient and versatile setup that complemented the church’s intricate design. Working within a nearly 200-year-old structure presented multiple challenges, including:
- Integrating old light fixtures with new advanced controls while maintaining the historical aesthetic.
- Highlighting the church’s complex architectural features with modern lighting applications.
- Installing a new battery inverter system for emergency lighting capabilities.
- Overcoming access difficulties due to high ceilings and a restrictive attic space.
- Upgrading the roof-mounted exterior lighting system to enhance the church’s striking façade.
Outcome
Despite inevitable challenges throughout the project, Claypool Electric successfully delivered a lighting system that enhanced the beauty and functionality of the historic church. The newly installed system provides improved energy efficiency, greater control, and an enhanced visual experience for congregants.
The rededication ceremony on Sept. 9, 2024, celebrated the church’s restoration, with more than 500 attendees gathering to witness the lighting transformation during a special Mass led by Bishop Earl Fernandes.
There were approximately 1,160 man-hours worked, ensuring the project was completed to the highest standards while preserving the church’s historical integrity.
Highlights
- Seamlessly integrated modern lighting controls with antique fixtures.
- Improved energy efficiency while maintaining the church’s historic character.
- Installed exterior lighting to accentuate architectural details.
- Successfully navigated structural constraints to complete the installation.
