Central Ohio’s Largest Photovoltaic Solar Field Unveiled

Project installed by Claypool Electric and Dovetail Solar and Wind

Today, the Ohio National Guard unveiled a new photovoltaic solar field at the Major General Robert S. Beightler Armory in Columbus, Ohio. The system was implemented by Claypool Electric in partnership with Dovetail Solar and Wind. Dovetail designed and installed the 76 kilowatt (KW) solar system, which is now the largest solar field in Central Ohio.

Dovetail has provided renewable energy installation solutions for over 15 years and completed over 175 projects across Ohio. “This was a great project and the Ohio National Guard will immediately see the benefits of investing in clean, renewable solar energy,” said Al Frasz, Vice President, Dovetail Solar and Wind. This solar project is expected to save the Ohio National Guard more than 135,000 KW hours and $11,500 in its first year.

"This solar project is an important reminder of how an initial investment in clean energy will save money and lead to a cleaner economy," said Frasz. "Only if we create market certainty and reward innovation in clean energy technologies, can we begin to develop the economy necessary to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, create thousands of jobs and see projects like this all over Ohio."

"We are proud to be a partner with Dovetail and the Armory on this installation. Some projects just seem to come together nicely, and this was one of those," said Greg Davis, President, Claypool Electric.

This project was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Does your facility comply with NFPA 70E?

There are approximately 5-10 arc flash accidents involving a serious injury or fatality every day in the U.S. This has led the National Fire Protection Association to recognize and set standards for Arc Flash, Arc Blast, as well as electric shock safety in a document referred to as NFPA 70E. This document has been accepted by OSHA as the rulebook for electrical safety in the workplace.

In order to comply with these standards, management and building owners must complete a flash hazard analysis of the facilities electrical distribution equipment. There are also many indirect benefits attached to the study in addition to compliance with NFPA 70E:
  • Improve worker safety
  • Reduce personal and financial risk for your company and its employees
  • Compliance with all changing regulatory requirements (OSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, etc.)
  • Reduce lost worker productivity
  • Optimize system performance, efficiency and safety
The flash hazard analysis requires considerable judgment and electrical knowledge so, due to the complexity, the analysis should only be performed by a licensed professional electrical engineer with expertise in electrical distribution systems design. Here at Claypool Electric; we have qualified, experienced, electrical engineers ready to assist in getting your business back in compliance so you can focus on what you do best.

Claypool Electric, Inc. Completes Innovative Learning Center

This fall, the Hocking College Energy Institute in Logan was completed. It provides learning labs for students to train in alternative energy areas of fuel cells, bio-fuels, wind and solar power, and hybrid vehicles. The building will utilize a hands-on working lab with technology based learning designed for training on vehicular transportation technologies, as well as equipment for learning HVAC, solar, wind and geothermal systems. The project is being funded partly by a $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Claypool Electric, Inc. provided the entire electrical installation, as well as the technology infrastructure. As a part of it’s contract, the roof-mounted PV solar-system was provided, but the installation was done in partnership with the College’s students.

Employees Surprise Chris
Claypool on his Birthday

Chris said he was “totally surprised” when the staff surprised him with a casual party after work on July 9 for his 60th birthday. Employees presented the CEO his childhood motorcycle, completely restored. The rusted and dented ’65 Honda was pulled from one of the company’s storage buildings a year earlier to start the process.

Looking for ways to cut costs?

Consider AEP’s GridSmart Program

AEP is offering financial incentives to customers who install energy-efficient lighting and other systems. Senate Bill 221 set aggressive requirements for demand and energy savings. There is even a retroactive incentive for qualifying projects that have already been completed.

Our engineering department can help determine which program is right for you, and design the installation. The incentives are first-come, first-serve, so contact us right away!

Christina Deem Attains LEED “AP” Designation

Recognizing the importance of sustainable design to the future of our industry and our country, Christina Claypool Deem has successfully tested for, and attained, the designation of LEED “Accredited Professional” in new construction. We feel this is an opportunity to enhance Claypool Electric’s design-build offering.

The website of the US Green Building Council states that "The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings' performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality."

Having Christina on staff as a LEED AP will help owners and designers meet the requirements of certifying a project to LEED standards. Why choose to design a building using the LEED standards? Because LEED-certified buildings have reduced operating costs, provide a healthier and more productive environment for its occupants, and conserve our natural resources. Contact us if you have any questions regarding LEED requirements.
